Steps in Making a Ghillie Suit

by Miles Hoffs

A ghillie suit is used by many especially those who have jobs that have to sneak just like the military in training or the law enforcement agencies that do undercover works. It is also used by hunters so the animals will not see them when they are hunting. Even the photographers are using ghillie suit to get a great and closer position when taking photos of the wildlife. The ghillie suit is best for camouflage. There are readily available ghillie suit to purchase but if you are a do-it-yourself person, then you can purchase the ghillie suit kits instead. But, how to make a ghillie suit?

Making a ghillie suit is just simple. Only three steps are to be followed. Secure a jacket and pants, put netting over them, and attach painted jute to the netting. Of course the details are still to be discussed.

First, you should decide whether you are going to use a one piece or a two piece suit. The advantage of using a one piece suit is that it is easier to wear and you can avoid tearing up your jacket or your pants while crawling. In the two piece suit, you can choose to just wear the jacket whenever you do not need to wear the pants anymore. Once you determine which suit to select, bear in mind that you have to choose a size larger by one or two than your normal suits.

Secondly, when netting, use a strong net like volleyball net or a fish net. Use a darker color of nets. Attach it then to the suit by sewing it. A waxed dental floss can be used since it is strong and cheaper. Then, put shoe glue for it to hold stronger. If you are walking or just crouching, you can sew the netting at the front of the suit. If you do a lot if crawling, you can put it only at the back of the suit. Or if you want to cover the whole suit, then be it.

Next is to dye the jute threads. Choose a color that can blend perfectly in the environment. Dye the threads according to the colors that you want. Once it is done, cut the threads into different lengths and attach them into the netting. Tie the different colored jutes onto the netting square.

Step back and examine your suit. If you are not happy with the colors, spray it with spray paints to add more color. You are then done making your very own ghillie suit. You may not win in the paintball battle game with your friends but at least you are so proud that you made your own ghillie suit.
