Turkey Hunting - The Ultimate Archery Challenge

by Janet Lewison

Puppies are just children, they don't know what is right or wrong and they are apt to destroy things by biting, tearing and chewing not because they want to be disobedient, because how can you be disobedient if nobody has told you what is acceptable behavior. So until you have trained the pup and taught him what is acceptable and what is not can you expect him to understand what he can do and what not. One of the problems you face is that the puppy has teething problems at that young age and for about 3 months straight until he gets his permanent teeth will he need to chew to sooth his gums. Puppies will chew for a couple of reasons, one is to relieve pain, ensure proper development of their new teeth, and also take care of boredom. The sooner you understand those three reasons and accept you can't get a puppy to stop chewing. To puppy-proofing your home requires that you look at it from his perspective and remove all the things that are within and easy reach that may either be destroyed or is dangerous for him. If you have a room where puppy may be left more or less unattended or unsupervised for periods of time, ensure that everything you don't want him to get into is out of reach.

As planned, I had remembered everything I had intended to deliver to Kansas. I must admit, I'm very fortunate to be able to hunt deer and turkey in Missouri and Kansas. Part of the fun associated with hunting out of state is being able to refer to my brother Brian as "the guide". Just as dad and I try to ensure everything is in order for Brian when he comes home to hunt, Brian does the same for our Kansas hunts.

The Second Era, Growth of Civilization As people gathered together and civilization really began, the role of men as hunters changed as well. Cities, by their very nature, require a variety of people with a lot of skills. There needed to be craftsmen and weavers, animal handlers and other trades so that everyone could have access to everything they needed. Instead of the split between men and women, hunting became the task of those most suited for hunting. These were usually always men, as it was looked down upon for women to participate in this line of work. This was also the turning point where hunting becoming a sport. Civilizations, such as the Babylonians, the Egyptians, and the Romans all had their hunters and craftsmen. The Romans, took hunting as a sport to a whole new level, capturing prey alive for sale or gladiatorial competitions. Only certain individuals were hunters, allowing the select men to feed those in their community.

After splashing through the low spots, I finally made my way to the blind set up in the north east corner of a bean stubble field. This spot was very familiar to me as it was the exact location I killed my bird almost a year ago. After getting all my gear in the blind and setting up the decoys, it was now time to...well, sit and wait...the most important skill needed to turkey hunt. After listening to the coyotes announce their presence and the rest of nature start to wake up the first turkey finally cut loose. No need to be concerned about him since he had to be over 300 yards away. Over the next 3 hours, every bird I heard...which in total was between 10-12...must have been within a stone's throw of the first one.

The Fourth Era, The Industrial Period On the heels of the Middle Ages was the Industrial period. This era stretched from beyond the 1700s until just after the start of the 1900s. The evolution of machines brought about great changes in hunting. Large farms became very popular, where livestock was raised instead of the practice of hunting wild animals, downgrading hunting to only become a past time. Guns, ranging from muskets to rifles, were being to be used extensively. Archery was downgraded to sport use only, though it was very popular for tests of skill.

Convinced I was going to stick it out in this blind until lunch, I had to resort to Facebook on my Blackberry to occasionally entertain me. As I was about ready to give the mouth call another try, I noticed a shiny black object coming thru the woods. What's this? He never made a sound.

Competitive hunting, such as fox hunting, is still greatly enjoyed by many people who prefer a little more action to their hunting. In the modern world, safety and skill are the requirements for hunting, and it is open for anyone who is willing to learn proper weapon handling and obtain all of the documents necessary to hunt. Regulations on guns and hunting have been developed to prevent species from going extinct. While hunting is still very popular, the modern day has a lot more restrictions that in any other era in the history of hunting. Each of these eras of the history of hunting have done a lot for the sport and trade, giving it a rich heritage that shouldn't be forgotten.
